NounsĀ (names of people, places, things, ideas) are very important in English. They are used as subjects of sentences and clauses and as objects of verbs and prepositions.

There are many different kindsĀ of nouns in English, and they may be classified (divided into groups) in many ways.

Probably the most basic classification of nouns is into two broad types: countable and uncountable. Countable nouns have two forms–singular (for only one of the noun) and plural (for moreĀ than one of the noun). Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in the same way as countable nouns because they have only one form–no plurals.

Let’s take a brief look at countable nouns first.

Ā

Countable Nouns

Ā

We can divide countable nouns into two large groups:Ā regularĀ andĀ irregular.

NounsĀ (names of people, places, things, ideas) are
very important in English.

They are used asĀ subjectsĀ  Ā of sentences and clauses and asĀ objectsĀ ofĀ verbsĀ Ā andĀ prepositions.Ā There are many different kindsĀ Ā ofĀ nounsĀ in English, and they may be classifiedĀ (dividedĀ into groups) in many ways.

Probably the most basic classification of nouns is
into two broad types:Ā countableĀ andĀ uncountable.

CountableĀ nouns have two forms–singular
(forĀ only one of the noun) andĀ pluralĀ (for more
thanĀ one of the noun).Ā

UncountableĀ nouns cannot
beĀ counted in the same way as countable nouns
because theyĀ have only one form–no plurals.

Let’s take a brief look atĀ countableĀ nouns first.

Countable Nouns

We can divide countable nouns into two large
groups:Ā regularĀ andĀ irregular.

Regular Countable Nouns

RegularĀ countable nouns make their plurals

1. Ā  by addingĀ -sĀ orĀ -esĀ to the singular form;
Ā  Ā  Ā
Ā 2. Ā

by changing finalĀ yĀ toĀ iĀ and addingĀ -es
if the singular ends in aĀ consonantĀ +Ā y.

Note:Ā Nouns ending in aĀ vowelĀ +Ā y
doĀ notĀ change y to i and then add -es.

Irregular Countable Nouns

IrregularĀ countable nouns make their plurals
in special ways:

1. Ā  Some nouns ending inĀ fĀ change the
fĀ toĀ vĀ and then addĀ -es.
2. Ā  Some nouns haveĀ the sameĀ singular
and plural forms.
3. Ā  Some nouns use plural forms from
other languages–not from English.

Uncountable Nouns (Introduction)

Many nouns in English areĀ uncountable:Ā they do not
have plural forms and cannot be counted in the normal
way (one ___ , two ___ , etc.).

TheseĀ nounsĀ are oftenĀ names for materials that have mass but cannot be
separated into units (for example,Ā water,Ā sugar,Ā milk).

Because uncountable nouns do not have singular and
plural forms, the articlesĀ aĀ andĀ anĀ cannot be used
with them.Ā

QuantifiersĀ such asĀ some,Ā any,Ā a little,
andĀ a lot ofĀ are used instead.

Examples:

I wantĀ someĀ orange juice.

Uncountable Nouns (Quantifiers #1)

Ā

Because uncountable nouns in English do not have plurals
and cannot be counted in the normal way,Ā quantifiers
are often used as a way of “measuring” them. The basic
quantifiers areĀ some,Ā any,Ā a little,Ā andĀ a lot of, but there
are many more.

One group of quantifiers is common with food and items
found at home: the names of theĀ containersĀ in which the
items are sold:

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā
Ā  quantifier (container) Ā  uncountable nouns
Ā  a bag of _____ Ā  candy, flour, sugar, rice
Ā  a bottle of _____ Ā  water, wine, beer, ketchup
Ā

quantifiers which showĀ measurementsĀ ofĀ weight,
volume, etc.:

a fifth of _____

Ā

whiskey, scotch, rum,
other alcoholic beverages
(but not wine)

Ā  a gallon of _____ Ā  gasoline, milk, juice,
ice cream

Special Notes:

1.

Ā

Quantifiers showing measurements may also be
used withĀ countableĀ nouns:

a pound ofĀ potatoes, tomatoes, other vegetables

Ā  Ā  Ā

2.

Ā

Numbers and containers may also be combined
with measurements which are used as quantifiers:

a three-pound can ofĀ coffee

FillĀ Ā in:Ā Ā much,Ā Ā many ,Ā Ā lotsĀ  Ā of ,Ā  aĀ  Ā lotĀ  Ā of ,Ā Ā little ,Ā Ā most ,Ā Ā aĀ  Ā little ,Ā Ā little ,Ā Ā aĀ  Ā few ,Ā Ā few.
