Course Content

The Foundations of Hair & Color Theory
This foundational module is your "colorist's boot camp," covering the essential science you must know before you ever open a single color tube. We'll start with the non-negotiable rules of salon safety and sanitation, with a critical focus on allergy patch tests. You'll learn the anatomy of the hair—the cuticle, cortex, and medulla—and why that structure dictates how color works. We'll then explore how to analyze hair properties like porosity, which is the key to predictable results. Finally, we'll dive deep into color theory: mastering the color wheel, the level system (1-10), underlying pigments, and tones (ash, gold). This module finishes with the most important non-technical skill: the client consultation.

  • Welcome & Salon Safety (Sanitation, Patch Tests, Allergies)
  •  Hair Anatomy 101 (The Structure: Cuticle, Cortex, Medulla)
  •  Hair Properties (Porosity, Elasticity, Density, and Texture)
  • The Color Wheel: Your Ultimate Guide
  • The Level System (1-10) and Underlying Pigments
  •  Understanding Tones (Ash, Gold, Neutral, Violet, Red)
  • Learner’s Activity
  • Purpose of Performing a Patch Test Before Hair Color Service

The Colorist’s Toolkit: Products & Formulation
Module Description: This module is your introduction to the "chemistry cabinet." You will learn the entire arsenal of products a colorist uses. We'll start by defining the four main types of hair color (Temporary, Semi, Demi, and Permanent) and, most importantly, their chemical differences and why you would choose one over the other. You'll gain a deep understanding of Developers, the peroxide "activators" that make color work, and learn what each "Volume" (10, 20, 30, 40) actually does. We'll demystify Lighteners (bleach) and Toners (glosses), explaining their specific roles in the color process. You'll also learn about modern bond builders (like Olaplex) that protect the hair's integrity. Finally, we'll cover your physical tools of the trade and the fundamentals of how to read a color chart and mix your first formulas.

Foundational Application Techniques
This module is where your brush meets the hair. Now that you understand color theory and your product toolkit, you must master the physical application. We will start with the fundamental building block of all clean color work: proper sectioning, focusing on the universal 4-quadrant system for control. You'll then learn the two most common services: the single-process virgin application (learning to avoid "hot roots") and the single-process root retouch (learning to avoid "banding"). We'll cover the specific techniques for toning and glossing at the shampoo bowl. A major focus will be on gray coverage, exploring the difference between "blending" and "full coverage" and the formulation strategies required. Finally, we'll cover the correct procedures for rinsing, shampooing, and post-color treatments to lock in your work and ensure hair health.

Dimensional Color: Foiling & Highlights
This module is where you move from single-process applications to creating dimension. Highlights, lowlights, and babylights are the most requested and profitable color services in modern salons. You'll learn the core principles of highlighting—what it is and why we do it. We'll cover your specialized tools, including different types of foils and how to "lock" them. You'll learn the crucial difference between weaving and slicing hair sections and how to create clean sectioning patterns for foiling. We'll then walk through the step-by-step application for a full-head foil, a partial foil, and the ever-popular "money piece". Finally, you'll learn the art of toning your highlights using advanced techniques like root tapping, root smudging, and color melting to create that seamless, high-end, "lived-in" blend.

Advanced Artistry: Balayage & Creative Color
This module is where you transition from a technician to a true artist. You'll learn the most in-demand, modern, and creative color techniques, starting with Balayage, the art of "free-hand painting". We'll cover the fundamental strokes, sectioning, and saturation rules for creating soft, "sun-kissed" gradients. You'll learn the difference between traditional Balayage and Foilyage, a hybrid technique that combines painting with foils for a brighter lift. We'll explore gradient coloring techniques like Ombré and Sombré. Finally, we'll dive into the vibrant world of "Vivids" or fantasy colors, covering the critical bleaching prep needed to create a blank canvas, and the application methods for achieving beautiful color melts and rainbow effects.

Color Correction & Problem-Solving
This module is your advanced "boot camp" for fixing color services that have gone wrong. Color correction is widely considered the most difficult and highest-level skill a colorist can possess, requiring a deep, intuitive understanding of all our previous modules. We'll start with the core principles of color correction, focusing on the critical trinity of consultation, strand testing, and managing expectations. We will then walk through detailed case studies for the most common problems: how to take a client "going darker" (e.g., blonde to brown) by correctly "filling" the hair; how to "fix brass" by neutralizing unwanted tones; how to safely remove artificial color (like box dye); and how to correct bands and splotches. Finally, we'll cover the most important business and ethical skill: knowing when the hair is too damaged and when to say "no."

The Business of Hair Color
This module is where your artistry meets entrepreneurship. Having mastered the technical skills of hair color, you must now learn how to build a profitable and sustainable career. We'll start by exploring the three primary career paths (Commission, Booth Rental, Salon Suite) and help you decide which is right for you. We'll then focus on your single most important marketing tool: building a professional "Before & After" portfolio, with specific tips on photography and lighting for hair. You'll learn modern marketing strategies using social media, referrals, and rebooking to build a full clientele. We'll cover the business of color, from pricing your complex services (factoring in time and product costs) to managing your inventory and legal/insurance responsibilities.
