Definition:

The Past Continuous Tense is used to talk about:

  • An action that was happening at a specific time in the past

  • Two actions happening at the same time in the past

  • A longer action that was interrupted by a shorter one


Structure:

Affirmative Sentences (Positive statements):

Structure:
                 Subject + was/were + Verb + ing + Object

Subject Helping Verb
I / He / She / It was
We / You / They were

Examples:

  • I was watching TV.

  • She was cooking dinner.

  • They were playing cricket.

  • He was reading a story.

  • We were studying English.


Negative Sentences:

Structure:
                 Subject + was/were + not + Verb + ing + Object

Examples:

  • I was not sleeping.

  • She was not listening.

  • They were not doing homework.

  • He was not speaking.

  • We were not watching a movie.


Interrogative Sentences (Questions):

Structure:
                 Was/Were + Subject + Verb + ing + Object + ?

Examples:

  • Was she reading a book?

  • Were they playing football?

  • Was he talking to you?

  • Were you watching the news?

  • Was I shouting?


Time Words Commonly Used:

  • At 7 o’clock

  • While

  • When

  • Last night

  • Yesterday at this time


Real-life Usage Examples:

  1. I was eating dinner at 8 PM last night.

  2. She was studying while I was sleeping.

  3. They were watching a movie when the power went out.

  4. He was playing outside all evening.

  5. We were reading the newspaper yesterday morning.
