Definition:

The Present Continuous Tense is used to talk about:

  • Actions happening right now

  • Actions happening around the current time

  • Planned future actions (with time reference)


Structure:

Affirmative Sentences (Positive statements):

Structure:

                 Subject + is/am/are + Verb + ing + Object

Subject Helping Verb
I am
He / She / It is
We / You / They are

Examples:

  • I am eating lunch.

  • She is watching a movie.

  • They are playing football.

  • He is reading a book.

  • We are studying English.


Negative Sentences:

Structure:
                 Subject + is/am/are + not + Verb + ing + Object

Examples:

  • I am not sleeping.

  • She is not cooking.

  • They are not working today.

  • He is not watching TV.

  • We are not playing outside.


Interrogative Sentences (Questions):

Structure:
                 Is/Am/Are + Subject + Verb + ing + Object + ?

Examples:

  • Are you studying now?

  • Is she writing a letter?

  • Are they coming to the party?

  • Am I speaking clearly?

  • Is he doing his homework?


Time Words Commonly Used:

  • Now

  • At the moment

  • Currently

  • Today

  • This week


Real-life Usage Examples:

  1. I am teaching my students right now.

  2. She is talking on the phone.

  3. They are cleaning the house.

  4. We are learning English together.

  5. He is driving to work at the moment.
