1. Recap: The 8 Parts of Speech

Part of Speech Function Example
Noun Names a person, place, thing, or idea dog, city, love
Pronoun Replaces a noun he, she, it, they
Verb Shows action or state of being run, is, jump
Adjective Describes a noun or pronoun blue, tall, happy
Adverb Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb quickly, very, often
Preposition Shows relationship between words in, on, at, under
Conjunction Connects words or clauses and, but, because
Interjection Expresses emotion wow!, oh no!, hey!

2. Group Activity: Create Paragraphs or Dialogues

Instructions:

  1. Divide students into small groups.

  2. Each group will write a short paragraph or dialogue (4–6 sentences) using all 8 parts of speech at least once.

  3. After writing, each group will present their work to the class and identify the parts of speech in their sentences.

Example Paragraph:
Wow! Yesterday, my sister and I went to the beach. We played happily in the warm sand under the sun. She screamed because the water was cold, but I loved it!

Parts used:

  • Interjection: Wow!

  • Noun: sister, beach, sand, water

  • Pronoun: I, we, she

  • Verb: went, played, screamed, loved

  • Adverb: happily

  • Adjective: warm, cold

  • Preposition: under

  • Conjunction: but, because

 

 


4. Reflective Discussion: How Grammar Enhances Communication

Prompt Questions for Class Discussion:

  • Why is it important to know and use all parts of speech correctly?

  • How does grammar help us become better writers and speakers?

  • Can you think of a time when grammar confusion caused misunderstanding?

  • Which part of speech was most challenging or fun for you to learn?

Facilitator’s Notes:
Encourage students to share examples of improved writing or speaking. Help them understand that grammar is not just about rules but about clarity, creativity, and confidence in communication.
